The Complete Married Man's Guide To Spousal Responses

The complete married man's guide has three replies. For any utterance from the Little Woman. Married? Then memorize.

1. I'm sorry.
The old movie Love Story, starring Al Gore, had as its thesis, Love is never having to say you're sorry. The Love Story, as Gore reminded us, is based on Al and his college sweetie. And offers a counter case study in proper responses. In love and marriage.

Al Gore, who confused getting the hots for Tipper with global warming, is also wrong about apologizing.

The apology is the core of marital harmony. It is number one.

Love is always saying you're sorry.

If you want to get lucky, you better be sorry. Start now. [Deleted by Charmaine the Editrix.]

"I'm sorry, dear."

Your Business Blogger is up to 17 I'm sorry's per day.

2. Yes, dear.

All purpose response. Use whenever in doubt.

3. I didn't notice.

This response is the most difficult to master and requires years of practice. Usually needed when asked about (her) weight gains during pregnancies and holidays. Or anything involving the size of anything and her swimsuit. Or any other woman's swimsuit.

Here's how it works with a practiced pro, such as Your Business Blogger.

We recently had a house guest, Carolina, a young woman visiting from Mexico. And Charmaine says, "Isn't she beautiful?" I struggle for a response. I reach for number three.

"Oh?" says I. "I didn't notice."

I didn't notice. Until she left and Charmaine blogged on the visit.

Then I noticed. When it was safe.

They say that one of the things celebrities hate to hear is "Wow, you are much more beautiful/handsome/tall/whatever on camera than you are in real life. . . " And in fact I remember being astonished when I once came across a shoot of Cheryl Tiegs in California at the height of her popularity and discovering that she was, well, fairly ordinary in person.

Carolina Carvajal is one of the other kind -- even more beautiful in real life because she has such an inner beauty.

Carolina Carvajal
When I first met Carolina, I blurted out, "Wow, you're so beautiful," and then felt a little embarrassed when I subsequently discovered that she is a top model in Mexico.

Well, of course.

But back to the inner beauty. I was so pleased for my girls to get a chance to meet Carolina because she offers an example of a woman working hard to integrate her faith within an industry not well-known for purity and virtue. Her face peers down at visitors from towering billboards in Mexican cities, but she turns down modeling jobs that would require her to pose too provocatively. She asks herself, said her husband Luis who was translating for her, how could she go and teach Bible Study at church if she took those roles?

That's true beauty.

Baby Boo Loved Carolina Too!

Mudville Gazette has Open Post.

Outside the Beltway has Traffic Jam.

There's an interesting new carnival -- root word is carnal -- Love and Lust. Not safe for work. Except for my entry.

OK, so let me get this straight. Charmaine, your wife, asks you if you think another woman, not your wife, is beautiful? Oh man - talk about laying a trap ;-)
